Workshop on Translational Knowledge Management in Pharmaceutical R&D
The workshop, organised by INBIOMEDvision and hosted by the Innovative Medicines Initiative, will take place the 11th and 12th of July in Brussels and aims at offering a forum for awareness, discussion and interaction between key stakeholders for the development and implementation of innovative concepts and tools for innovative and effective translational and integrative knowledge management (KM) in pharmaceutical research. The participants are key representatives of IMI KM projects and from other related projects also funded by the European Commission, as well as other experts from Europe, USA and Japan.

Chemogenomics group is now Systems Pharmacology group
In its 10th anniversary, the Chemogenomics group of GRIB lead by Jordi Mestres has changed its name to Systems Pharmacology group. This new name aims to better reflect the evolution of this research group from its original focus on protein families to a systems view of chemical biology and drug discovery.

Open PHACTS apps get developer community buzzing
Experts from across Europe and beyond gathered in London at the end of April for the public release of the OpenPHACTS application programming interface (API) during the project’s Community Workshop. The API allows researchers to access and query the vast amounts of data compiled by the Open PHACTS project, creating their own, customised apps to do so if needed. The workshop featured demonstrations of two apps based on the API. PharmaTrek developed by researchers of GRIB provides with an intuitive tool to explore the reams of target-protein interaction data that are publicly availabl e. Meanwhile, the ChemBioNavigator app allows users to rapidly and easily compare the physicochemical properties of a molecule set.

UPF held an international course on Translational Bioinformatics
This 1-week course followed the series of multidisciplinary and innovative training activities organised by the project INBIOMEDvision and was held on the 22-26th of April at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (Spain) facilities at the lively University zone located uptown of Barcelona. The course was targeted to post graduate students with interest in the different integrative and translational research approaches in the field of Bioinformatics.
A group of 30 students from 10 different countries were selected to take part in the course based on personal motivation and previous study and research background with a special focus on translational and integrative studies.
The course was jointly organised with the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), the Bioinformatics Barcelona (BIB), Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the Spanish Technological Platform for Innovative Medicines (PTEMI), and the Spanish Institute of Bioinformatics (INB). The organising and selection commitee was chaired by Dr. Laura I. Furlong (GRIB, IMIM-UPF), and other members were Prof. Ferran Sanz and Dr. Núria López-Bigas (GRIB, IMIM-UPF).

PharmaTrek, a polypharmacology browser now released
PharmaTrek, a web-based tool developed by M.Carmen Carrascosa, member of the Chemogenomics group of GRIB (IMIM/ UPF) led by Jordi Mestres, within the framework of the EU funded project Open PHACTS, is officially released. Try it out now: http://www.pharmatrek.org
This tool offers a totally new way of questioning pharmacology databases in a more interactive manner. Please, have a look at the demo video.

eTOX project extension approved until 2016
The review of the eTOX extension proposal (ENSO) was very positively evaluated by IMI JU and an extension until 2016 has been approved. The accomplishments of the eTOX team were highlighted as recommendable and the reviewers also considered it impressive that the eTOX consortium has generated such a large number of high quality publications. The extension will build upon early successes by expanding the acquisition of additional toxicology data inputs (species, types of trials, etc) and allowing access to more public databases. For this purpose four new partners: Fraunhofer ITEM (Germany), Erasmus Medical Center (Holland), University of Leicester (UK) and Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (Spain), will join the consortium, allowing for greater linking between experimental animal and biochemical studies with human outcomes.
eTOX project is funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative Joint Undertaking (IMI-JU) and coordinated by the GRIB.
