GRIB participates in the foundation of the Iberoamerican Society for Bioinformatics (SoIBio)
SoIBio is a new International Scientific Society which purpose is to work in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics in South America. It was founded last October, 26th in Puerto Morelos (Mexico) with the participation of scientifics and researchers of most of South American countries, Spain and Portugal. Nuria B. Centeno, researcher of GRIB (IMIM/UPF) has participated in that meeting representing our Group and will take part of the Exchange and Collaboration Comission.

El GRIB participa en una iniciativa pionera en formació i ensenyament sobre genòmica en medicina (Nota de premsa generada per l´ICCC)
Aquest taller formatiu, impartit per docents de reconegut prestigi, entre els quals destaquen el Director del Programa de Recerca en Informàtica Biomèdica de l’IMIM-UPF, Ferran Sanz, i el Director Científic de l'Instituto Nacional de Bioinformática, Alfonso Valencia, inicia la seva activitat presencial a l’ICCC, durant dos dies, 13 i 14 d'octubre, completant la resta d'hores formatives amb tutories, activitats acadèmicament dirigides i avaluacions que duraran dos mesos a través d’una plataforma d’ensenyament localitzada al servidor de l’INB en el Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).

II International Symposium on Biomedical Informatics in Europe - Registration opened!
In the frame of the COMBIOMED network, GRIB and ISCIII organize the II International Symposium on Biomedical Informatics in Europe. This event will be held next October the 30th at the Auditorium of PRBB (Dr. Aiguader, 88 - Barcelona).
The Symposium aims to serve as a forum to present the results obtained and discuss the current hot topics in Biomedical Informatics. Registration is needed to attend this open Symposium .

Biotech’s new climate
Biotech is an essential arm of healthcare, but Europe also needs to develop and apply it as a tool to fight climate change and promote sustainability. That was one of the key messages to emerge from the 14th European Biotechnology Congress in Barcelona last week.
One of the largest European projects, the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), was the subject of a session in which Ferran Sanz, a biostatistics professor at University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, described eTOX, an IMI project that focuses on the evaluation of drug toxicity through computer models. The eTOX collaboration brings together 23 different EU public and private organisations, of which 5 come from Spain, but is the only IMI project led by Spain. Sanz is himself a director of eTOX.
Discussing the standing of the Spanish biotech sector, Sanz told Science|Business that many Spanish biotech companies have traditionally limited their search for funding and customers to the national market. “The current economic climate, which is particularly serious in Spain, could be an opportunity to transform a problem into a solution,” he believes. “Now is the right time for small biotech companies to look out for opportunities in Europe,” he said.

Jordi Villà-Freixa and Ferran Sanz granted with the 2009 Social Council awards of University Pompeu Fabra.
Jordi Villà-Freixa, head of Computational Biochemistry and Biophysics laboratory of GRIB and Ferran Sanz, Director of GRIB, have been granted with the 2009 Master Teaching Quality Award and the 2009 Knowledge Transfer Award respectively.
The Master Teaching Quality Award distinguishes the work of Dr. Villà-Freixa in the creation and development of the Master in Bioinformatics of University Pompeu Fabra.
The Knowledge Transfer Award distinguishes the contribution of Dr. Sanz to the development of new strategies in pharmaceutical research, as well as the promotion of public-private partnerships in the field.
They will receive these awards during the opening ceremony of the academic course 2009-2010 on September, 29th at UPF.

Presentation of the new laboratory of ChemBioBank
This event took place last 23rd of July at Barcelona Science Park (PCB). Developed by the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and the Institut Municipal d´Investigació Mèdica (IMIM), CBB is an interactive space where the scientific community can share and enhance their knowledge. Its purpose is to create a public bank with a large, freely accessible, collection of compounds with annotated biological profiles. In addition, by means of chemoinformatic tools, molecular descriptors are also obtained. Manuel Pastor, Jordi Mestres and Ferran Sanz, senior researchers of GRIB, take part of this initiative.

Frontiers in Medicinal Chemistry: Emerging Targets, Novel Candidates and Innovative Strategies
This event scheduled to be held on October 4-6, 2009 in Barcelona(Spain) is organized by the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC) and with the collaboration of the Spanish Society of Medicinal Chemistry (SEQT).

Jordi Mestres, editor of the new magazine "Molecular Informatics"
Jordi Mestres, coordinator of the Chemogenomics Laboratory of the Research Group of Biomedical Informatics, GRIB (IMIM-UPF), will be one of the 4 editors of the new magazine Molecular Informatics that will be published by Wiley-VCH publishers starting in January 2010.
