Laura I. Furlong is head of the Integrative Biomedical Informatics Group of the Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics, GRIB (IMIM-UPF), associate lecturer at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and founder of the spin off MedBioinformatics Solutions. She has a PhD in Biology from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and a Msc in Bioinformatics by University Pompeu Fabra. She has a broad expertise covering molecular biology, computational systems biology and text mining. Her current research is focused in developing bioinformatic approaches to unravel the mechanisms underlying human diseases and to understand why drugs produce undesired effects. Director of 4 doctoral theses. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, and act as reviewer for the journals Bioinformatics, BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Systems Biology, and PLOS journals. She is Member of the Scientific Committee of the MARBiobanc at Parc de Salut Mar. She has participated in several FP7 projects (@neurist, EU-ADR), IMI projects like OpenPHACTS, eTOX, EMIF, iPiE and H2020 projects like MedBioinformatics. She is currently involved in the IMI projects FAIRplus, eTRANSAFE, transQST, and the H2020 project Elixir-Excelerate and the ITN Disc4All.
