Gabriel Santpere

Gabriel Santpere is a Miguel Servet researcher at IMIM and head of the Neurogenomics Group of the IMIM-UPF joint Research Programme on Biomedical Bioinformatics (GRIB). His scientific career has been focused on neuroscience and evolution by means of both experimental and computational approaches. He obtained his PhD in Neuroscience in 2009 by the University of Barcelona, a MSc on Bioinformatics in 2010 at the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and two consecutive postdocs stages at the Evolutionary Biology Institute of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain) and at the Department of Neuroscience at Yale School of Medicine (Yale University, USA). In 2019 he was awarded a LaCaixa Junior Leader fellowship and established his own independent research at the GRIB. In 2021 he was awarded a Miguel Servet Grant by the ISCIII. He has been co-director of 2 doctoral thesis and participated in more than 40 JCR articles in the fields of neurodegeneration, neurodevelopment and molecular evolution in multiple organisms, including primates and human herpesviruses

Research interests

Gabriel Santpere's group is interested in the evolutionary mechanisms that lead to human brain specializations, including human manifestations of multiple neuropsychiatric disorders. They also investigate the dynamics and evolutionary conservation of the binding sites of transcription factors relevant for neurodevelopment and neuropsychiatric traits. Their approaches use multiple data modalities, including single-cell and bulk transcriptomics and epigenomics data, as well as SNPs, eQTL, Hi-C and GWAS datasets.
